Genuine Competition Ahead?

French paramilitary police force said Wednesday it is ditching Microsoft for the free Linux operating system

This is great news. Something I wish our organisation could do, but can't. We have too many software packages that only work with MS Windows.

However, for an organisation like this, that only uses Office, web Browsing and E-mail, Linux can be a good fit. Also, as more orgs do this, then more application vendors have incentive to port their software. In the long run, it'll force MS to be more competitive, and maybe realize that many of their packages (Vista, Office, etc.) suffer from bloat and could be easily trimmed down to meet the majority of org needs.
