Gun Registry Hammer

It keeps coming up that the gun registry is the hammer to solve all our gun related problems.

An old saying comes to mind, when you have a hammer everything looks like a nail.

All these examples keep citing a central point that "because they searched the registry, they were able to obtain a warrant and remove the guns."

Maybe I'm being a little obtuse here.  But it appears to me, that since all gun owners and users have to be licensed and registered already, wouldn't that be enough justification for a warrant to search and seize all firearms?  If they do a search on a persons name, and find that they have a PAL that should be grounds enough for a search and seizure.  Unless I'm being naive or some obscure point here, I find the firearms registry somewhat redundant.
